Promitec present at the 1st Forum on the responsible use of antimicrobials

On October 29, 2019, Promitec Santander S.A..S participated as a guest attendee at the 1st Forum on Responsible Use of Antimicrobials, at the Sheraton Hotel in Bogotá, which was organized by the Inter-Union Alliance made up of: ANDI, FEDEACUA, FENAVI, FEDEGAN, PORKCOLOMBIA AND APROVET.

The event was attended by approximately 230 Colombian businessmen and 10 speakers from different countries such as Denmark, Brazil, Chile and the USA presented their experience and success stories regarding the responsible use of antimicrobials.

The Executive Director of Aprovet Dr. Leonardo García is the spokesperson for the Inter-Union Alliance in our country and started the event, later the delegate from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. César Corredor, the delegate from the Ministry of Health Dr. spoke. Johana Aponte and Dr. Alan Bojanic, representative in Colombia of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – FAO who expressed their support for the initiative.

The first talk was about the “Global vision of the responsible use of antimicrobials within the framework of the Antimicrobial Resistance-AMR strategy” and was given by Dr. Armando Hoet of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture-IICA, later the visions of the Tripartite Alliance were presented, presented by Dr. Marissa Caipo from FAO and Dr. Federico Luna from OIE.

In the second part of the event, international experiences on responsible use policies of antimicrobials were presented within the framework of “One Health” by Dr. Elisabeth Okholm from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and Dr. José Ricardo Lobo from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply of Brazil-MAPA.

Finally, in the third part of the Forum, business success stories were presented where it was highlighted that the best way to make responsible use of antimicrobials is not to use them as a way to promote growth in animals or as a way to minimize the effects of bad practices in animal production (Overcrowding, lack of hygiene, among others) and should only be used to treat animals that are sick but taking into account the amount, type and duration of the antibiotic treatments provided so that these do not affect human health; In addition to this, natural and sustainable alternatives such as the use of essential oils, phytobiotics, humates, among others, were presented to guarantee animal and human health as “one health”. The cases of: Poultry farming by Dr. Fabricio Da Silva-Brazil, Pig farming by Dr. Leonardo Cuevas-Chile, Livestock farming by Dr. André Días-Brazil, Aquaculture by Dr. Fernando Mardones-Chile and Balanced Foods by Dr. Marissa Herchler – USA were presented.

The event concluded with the conclusions of the day and the challenges in Colombia for all those involved in the animal protein production chain.
