“Essential Results, Healthy Intestines”, Swine Virtual Seminar

Last Thursday, March 18, 2021, the Virtual Seminar “Essential Results, Healthy Intestines” Was Held, which is Part of the Series of Livestock Profitability Webinars “Connect with the Natural” that Promitec Santander is Developing.

Two important speakers participated in this virtual conference, Dr. Alejandro Soraci from Argentina and Dr. Jaime Parra from Colombia, each of whom presented a universe of possibilities to improve profitability in the swine sector.

Dr. Alejandro Soraci presented his study related to the impact of dietary supplementation with certain essential oils (Esencial and Finbiox) on different intestinal health and zootechnical production parameters in pigs. Suggesting essential oils as an alternative to antibiotic growth promoters, which a pig could currently be receiving about 148 mg/kg/pig.

During the talk, the result of the study was highlighted, where the effect on plasma citrulline was observed, which is a biomarker of the metabolic activity of enterocytes, finding that on day 8 post-weaning, the piglets in the control group had 30% less plasma concentration in relation to animals with AEO (Esencial and finbiox), indicating that supplemented animals were better able to cope with intestinal stress from weaning.

The results of the improvement in intestinal morphometry in piglets supplemented with AEO (Esencial and Finbiox) were also highlighted, in addition to improving the intestinal absorption surface and the improvement in the production of volatile fatty acids, especially the 25% increase in butyric acid at the intestinal level. Concluding that the additives in the diets led to beneficial changes in metabolism and intestinal health. This was reflected in an improvement in zootechnical parameters where at the end of the cycle the animals supplemented with 75 ppm of AE presented a reduction of 0.14 conversion points with between six and eight kg more weight per animal compared to pigs that did not receive the product.

In the conference of Dr. Jaime Parra S., the importance of the study of the microbiome was highlighted as a fundamental part of understanding intestinal health and the general metabolism of animals; in addition to the need to find microbial biomarkers that allow correlating said result with intestinal, productive and economic variables.

It was observed that the addition of Oregano Essential Oil-AEO (Lippia Origanoides, E. Premix) in piglets during weaning decreased the expression of IL-8 and TNF-a, decreasing inflammation at the intestinal level. However, the increase in IL-10 was reported in animals supplemented with AEO, stimulating the anti-inflammatory response in the intestine of piglets.

The day ended with a sharing and the active participation of the attendees to the event, among which 3 were the winners of two dataloggers and a tablet.
