Last Wednesday, June 14 of this year, the \u201cFIRST NATBIO PROMITEC SWINE SEMINAR\u201d was held at the Intercontinental Hotel in the city of Medell\u00edn, Colombia; an event that included the participation of prominent national and international panelists who shared their knowledge on Intestinal Integrity in Pigs with the main swine companies in the country.<\/p>\n

The panelists included Dr. Martin Nyachoti (PhD University of Manitoba) and Dr. Juan Carlos Rodr\u00edguez (DVM, MSc, PhD. University of Prince Edward
Island) from Canada; Dr. Sergio G\u00f3mez (CENIDF and MA \u2013 INIFAP) from Mexico, Dr. Pablo Dami\u00e1n (PhD, MSc, DMTV \u2013 Universidad de la Rep\u00fablica Montevideo) from Uruguay and Dr. Jaime Parra (PhD, Msc \u2013 Universidad Nacional de Colombia).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The academic day covered the following topics: Advances and nutritional interventions to maintain intestinal integrity in pigs and Interconnection between breeding practices and results in the intestinal health of piglets (Dr. Nyachoti), Intestinal integrity and its relationship with immunity (Dr. Rodr\u00edguez), Changes in digestive physiology associated with infectious challenges such as coccidiosis, clostridiosis and dysbacteriosis (Dr. G\u00f3mez), Stress and well-being in pig production systems (Dr. Dami\u00e1n) and Intestinal integrity: New trends and development in pig farming (Dr. Parra).<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

We Highlight the Following Points from each of Their Presentations that should be Taken into Account to Improve Intestinal Integrity in Pigs:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

<\/p>\n

    \n
  • The cells of the intestine have a high metabolic capacity and a very short half-life of approximately one day, so the design of the diet of amino acids and specific nutrients at the level of the intestinal lumen is important.<\/li>\n
  • Intestinal cells form a barrier that is permanently being challenged by different substances and microorganisms that try to invade the body. They are responsible for containing these attacks by modifying, modulating, or eliminating any type of pathogen that affects their productivity; in that order of ideas, it is said that the origin of the immune system is directly associated with the development of the digestive tract.<\/li>\n
  • Products and supplements containing essential oils should be included in the daily diet of pigs due to their great benefits related to their regenerating properties of enterocytes (adjuvants of the growth of intestinal villi), bactericides against enterobacteria (E.colli and Salmonella), antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and stimulants of pancreatic enzymes that make them one of the most complete substances to
    improve and modulate optimal intestinal integrity.<\/li>\n
  • The measurement of Claudin and Ocloudin proteins demonstrates the correct functioning of intestinal integrity. These proteins are responsible for binding the enterocytes, thus preventing the passage of bacteria from the luminal environment to the blood environment (bacterial translocation).<\/li>\n
  • Stress levels in pigs should be controlled through the measurement of cortisol levels in the blood and damage to intestinal digestion and absorption with the measurement of urea levels. These levels are mainly affected in piglets by the change of food from milk to concentrate, separation from the mother, overcrowding, joining with pigs from other litters, change of location, among others.<\/li>\n
  • The main consequences of increased stress in pigs are the reduction of food intake that affects their intestinal morphology and weight gain, the increase of bacterial translocation, hypersalivation, diarrhea, general disturbances in the macrobiotic structure, disorders of digestive balance and over stimulation of the immune system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    At the end of the academic day, the attendees of the event had the opportunity to interact with their questions and concerns with the panelists; where the interest of the sector was evidenced to improve their practices and procedures to achieve greater profitability by promoting intestinal integrity in their pigs.<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

    For the Colombian company Promitec and its commercial brand NATBIO, it was an enriching experience to interact with the academy and the pig sector of the country during this
    seminar in which the expectations of attendance to it were exceeded by 30%.
